Red house, new tiled roof and veranda

Red timber house with white corners, new tiled roof and carved veranda

A classic red house with white corners whose roof was done. The tiles were cracked and the battens underneath had started to rot at the eaves. The owners wanted the same look back, but with a roof that lasts another thirty years.

At the same time we built a new veranda on the front, with railing and carved trim in the style the house originally had, and new steps on the gable.

What we did

  • Old roof stripped to the boarding
  • New underlay, battens and concrete tiles
  • New veranda with railing and carved trim
  • New external steps on the gable
  • Flashing round the chimney

The tricky part

The eaves. Under the old roof lay battens that had been wet for so long the nails no longer held. We replaced the bottom three rows of boarding along the whole long side before anything new went on. That was not in the quote, so we called, showed photos and had a yes the same afternoon.
