Deck with screen on a forest plot
A holiday house in the forest where the owners wanted a spot in the sun without the neighbours' lights shining in. The plot slopes, so the deck floats on footings and stays level while the ground drops away behind it.
The screen on two sides gives shelter and afternoon shade and makes the deck feel like a room rather than a platform.
What we did
- Footings below the frost line on sloping ground
- Joists and 28 mm decking in treated pine
- Slatted screen on two sides for privacy
- Fascia round the whole deck

The slope. The difference between front and back edge was almost 40 centimetres, so the rear footings got tall. We poured them deeper and put diagonal bracing under the deck so nothing moves when ten people stand on it at once.
