New tiled roof on an older house

New tiled roof with two chimneys, new flashing and roof ladder

A house from the early twentieth century with cracked tiles and battens that had given way in several places. We stripped everything to the boarding, replaced what was bad and laid new underlay before the tiles went on.

The chimneys got new flashing and caps, and the roof got a ladder and snow guards so the chimney sweep can get up safely.

What we did

  • Old tiles and battens stripped
  • New underlay and new battens
  • Terracotta concrete tiles
  • New flashing and caps on two chimneys
  • Roof ladder and snow guards

The tricky part

The weather. An older roof without underlay cannot be left open overnight. We did one half of the roof at a time and covered with tarpaulin every evening. The rain came in the middle of the second week and the house stayed dry.
